What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing redness, visible blood vessels, and, in some cases, small, red, pus-filled bumps. It can be a source of discomfort and insecurity for many, but with the right care and approach, it can be effectively managed.

Rosacea is a prevalent chronic skin condition affecting approximately 5% of adults worldwide

In the UK, it is estimated that around 5% of women and just under 4% of men are affected.

Living with rosacea can be emotionally challenging, as its visible nature often impacts self-confidence and everyday life. Many people feel frustrated or self-conscious about the redness, flare-ups, or bumps, especially in social or professional settings. It’s completely normal to feel anxious about how others might perceive your skin, and the unpredictability of triggers can make it even more stressful.

But you’re not alone in this journey—taking steps to manage stress, finding support, and learning to care for both your skin and your emotional wellbeing can make a big difference. With the right approach, it’s possible to feel more confident and in control.

The Relationship Between Rosacea, Gut Health and  SIBO

Recent research has highlighted a strong connection between rosacea and gut health. A significant number of individuals with rosacea also experience gastrointestinal issues, including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO occurs when there is an imbalance in the bacteria within the small intestine, leading to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and altered bowel habits.

Studies suggest that treating SIBO can lead to significant improvements in rosacea symptoms, highlighting the importance of addressing gut health alongside skin health.

At Healthy Skin Clinic, we adopt a holistic approach, considering internal factors such as diet, gut microbiome, and overall digestive function in our treatment protocols.

Common Triggers for Rosacea:

Common triggers that may provoke or exacerbate rosacea symptoms include:

  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to sunlight, wind, hot or cold weather, and humidity can lead to flare-ups.

  • Lifestyle Factors: Physical exertion, stress, and certain medications are known to trigger symptoms.

  • Dietary Factors: Consumption of alcohol (especially red wine), spicy foods, hot beverages, and certain dairy products can aggravate rosacea.

Identifying and avoiding personal triggers is crucial in managing rosacea effectively. Keeping a diary to track flare-ups can help in recognising specific factors that influence your condition.

  • Do I need to be referred by my doctor?
You do not need a referral from your doctor. You are welcome to book your programme with us via our website. We will ask you to share your existing test results and complete some forms prior to your first appointment so we can familiarise ourselves with your case. If you are unsure whether or not you should book a programme with us, feel free to email us on hello@healthyskinclinic.co.uk or you can book a 20 minute consultation with one of our practitioners to discuss.
  • Do you accept private medical insurance?
We do not directly work with private health insurances. However you may want to check your policy details with your insurance as they may cover nutritional therapy. If that is the case, you will need to claim our fees back directly with your insurance.
  • How soon can I expect to see improvements?
We often receive this question, and our response is that it’s difficult to say before we start. That said, many clients notice positive changes in their skin with even small adjustments, and most see improvements within a few weeks. The speed of your progress will depend on several factors, including the specific nature of your skin condition and your individual circumstances. Our programmes are designed to provide the best chance of success. Through our experience, we’ve found that working with clients over a series of appointments allows for consistent guidance, tailored support, and accountability. This structured approach helps clients remain on track and achieve better outcomes for their skin health.
  • What are the additional costs outside of the package fees?
This varies from case to case. Please note that our package fees do not cover any testing or supplements. If additional testing beyond what you may already have from your GP or specialist is needed, we will request your doctor to arrange these tests for us, provided they are available through the NHS at no cost to you. Alternatively, we might recommend functional tests that are exclusively offered by private laboratories. We may also suggest supplements as part of your treatment plan, and we will explain our reasons for considering them. It's important to emphasise that we always take your financial situation into consideration, and there is absolutely no pressure for you to commit to additional expenses. We are experienced in working with individuals from various financial backgrounds and working within limited budgets.
  • What are your qualifications?
We are fully insured BANT Registered Nutritional Therapists and registered with the CNHC, the main governing bodies within the UK. Our practitioners have completed extensive additional training to stay current with the latest research, ensuring they deliver the highest quality care to our clients.
  • I have another question
If you can't find the answer to your question on our website, please get in touch. You can email us on hello@healthyskinclinic.co.uk and we will be happy to assist. Alternatively you can book a 20 minute consultation with one of our practitioners to discuss your concerns and how they can help.

Our approach is designed to uncover and address the underlying factors contributing to your rosacea.
We adopt a functional medicine perspective, focusing on treating you as a whole person and targeting the root causes of rosacea rather than simply managing its symptoms.
Rosacea is often influenced by a range of interconnected factors, such as immune system imbalances, chronic inflammation, and lifestyle influences.
By identifying and tackling these underlying issues, we aim to minimise the intensity and frequency of rosacea flare-ups while enhancing your overall health and wellbeing.

Outlined below are the essential elements of our rosacea management strategy:
