What is eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the skin’s ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness, redness, itching, and irritation. It can range from mild to severe, with flare-ups causing significant discomfort and, in some cases, skin infections due to scratching. Eczema is not a single condition but a spectrum of skin disorders, with atopic dermatitis being the most common form.

Eczema is a widespread condition, affecting up to 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 5 children in the UK. It often begins in childhood, but it can persist into adulthood or even develop later in life. While some outgrow the condition, others experience lifelong challenges with eczema, which can vary in severity over time.

Gut health, immune function, and eczema

Eczema is deeply connected to gut health, immune function, and environmental factors. The gut microbiome plays a key role in regulating the immune system, but when imbalanced (dysbiosis), it can lead to inflammation and heightened immune responses, worsening eczema symptoms.

Food sensitivities like dairy, gluten, eggs, nuts, and nightshade vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, peppers, and aubergines) can trigger inflammation for some individuals. Additionally, histamine intolerance—linked to high-histamine foods like fermented products, aged cheeses, and alcohol—can exacerbate itching and inflammation due to impaired histamine breakdown.

Environmental triggers, such as dust mites, pollen, and harsh skincare products, also play a role. Mould exposure is a significant yet often overlooked factor, as it can activate mast cells, leading to histamine release and worsening eczema symptoms.

The Emotional and Physical Impact of Eczema

Eczema is much more than a skin condition—it can have a profound impact on mental health and quality of life. The persistent itching, visible symptoms, and discomfort can lead to:

  • Emotional distress: Many people with eczema experience anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, often linked to the visible nature of the condition and its impact on daily life.

  • Sleep disturbances: Itching and irritation, particularly at night, can disrupt sleep, leading to fatigue and further emotional strain.

  • Impact on daily life: Eczema can interfere with work, social activities, and relationships, particularly during flare-ups.

Addressing eczema requires not only treating the physical symptoms but also considering the emotional well-being of those affected.

At Healthy Skin Clinic, we take a holistic and supportive approach to addressing your eczema and overall wellbeing.

  • Do I need to be referred by my doctor?
You do not need a referral from your doctor. You are welcome to book your programme with us via our website. We will ask you to share your existing test results and complete some forms prior to your first appointment so we can familiarise ourselves with your case. If you are unsure whether or not you should book a programme with us, feel free to email us on hello@healthyskinclinic.co.uk or you can book a 20 minute consultation with one of our practitioners to discuss.
  • Do you accept private medical insurance?
We do not directly work with private health insurances. However you may want to check your policy details with your insurance as they may cover nutritional therapy. If that is the case, you will need to claim our fees back directly with your insurance.
  • How soon can I expect to see improvements?
We often receive this question, and our response is that it’s difficult to say before we start. That said, many clients notice positive changes in their skin with even small adjustments, and most see improvements within a few weeks. The speed of your progress will depend on several factors, including the specific nature of your skin condition and your individual circumstances. Our programmes are designed to provide the best chance of success. Through our experience, we’ve found that working with clients over a series of appointments allows for consistent guidance, tailored support, and accountability. This structured approach helps clients remain on track and achieve better outcomes for their skin health.
  • What are the additional costs outside of the package fees?
This varies from case to case. Please note that our package fees do not cover any testing or supplements. If additional testing beyond what you may already have from your GP or specialist is needed, we will request your doctor to arrange these tests for us, provided they are available through the NHS at no cost to you. Alternatively, we might recommend functional tests that are exclusively offered by private laboratories. We may also suggest supplements as part of your treatment plan, and we will explain our reasons for considering them. It's important to emphasise that we always take your financial situation into consideration, and there is absolutely no pressure for you to commit to additional expenses. We are experienced in working with individuals from various financial backgrounds and working within limited budgets.
  • What are your qualifications?
We are fully insured BANT Registered Nutritional Therapists and registered with the CNHC, the main governing bodies within the UK. Our practitioners have completed extensive additional training to stay current with the latest research, ensuring they deliver the highest quality care to our clients.
  • I have another question
If you can't find the answer to your question on our website, please get in touch. You can email us on hello@healthyskinclinic.co.uk and we will be happy to assist. Alternatively you can book a 20 minute consultation with one of our practitioners to discuss your concerns and how they can help.

Our framework is centred on understanding and correcting the underlying imbalances contributing to your eczema.

We take a functional medicine approach to eczema focusing on treating the individual as a whole, addressing the underlying causes rather than merely managing symptoms.

We recognise that eczema is often the result of complex interactions within the body, such as immune dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and lifestyle factors.

By identifying and resolving these root causes, we aim to reduce the severity and frequency of eczema flare-ups while improving overall health and wellbeing.

Below are the key components of a our approach to eczema:
