How common is psoriasis?
Psoriasis affects approximately 2-3% of the global population, with millions of people in the UK living with this condition. Research suggests that psoriasis is equally prevalent in men and women, although individual symptoms and triggers can vary greatly from person to person.
Do we know what causes psoriasis?
The exact cause of psoriasis remains unclear, but it is widely recognised as a multifaceted condition involving genetic predisposition, immune system dysregulation, and environmental triggers. Psoriasis is characterised by an overactive immune response that accelerates skin cell turnover, leading to the formation of plaques and inflammation.
In addition to genetic factors, a range of triggers can exacerbate symptoms, including stress, infections, hormonal imbalances, diet, and certain medications. Studies show that diet can play a significant role in managing psoriasis, with specific foods potentially influencing inflammation and immune function.
Food sensitivities, such as those to nightshade vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, and potatoes), are often discussed in relation to psoriasis. These foods contain compounds like solanine, which may worsen inflammation in some individuals. Similarly, gluten sensitivity or intolerance is common among people with psoriasis, particularly those with coeliac disease or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Gluten can promote inflammation and intestinal permeability, both of which may aggravate psoriasis symptoms.
Histamine intolerance is another area of interest. Histamine, a compound involved in immune and inflammatory responses, is present in certain foods and released during allergic or inflammatory reactions. Individuals with reduced capacity to break down histamine may experience heightened inflammation, potentially worsening psoriasis. Foods high in histamine, such as aged cheeses, fermented products, cured meats, and alcohol, can be particularly problematic.
The emotional toll of psoriasis
Psoriasis is more than a skin condition—it can have a profound impact on a person’s confidence and self-worth. The visible nature of psoriasis, with its red, scaly patches, often draws unwanted attention or misconceptions, leading to feelings of embarrassment or self-consciousness.
Many individuals with psoriasis experience anxiety about social interactions, choosing to cover up or avoid activities that expose their skin. This emotional burden can contribute to low self-esteem, stress, and even depression, creating a cycle where psychological distress exacerbates the condition.
At The Healthy Skin Clinic, we understand the deep emotional toll psoriasis can take and are here to provide compassionate care, helping you regain not only healthier skin but also renewed confidence in yourself.

At Healthy Skin Clinic, we take a holistic and supportive approach to addressing your psoriasis and overall wellbeing.

The speed of your progress will depend on several factors, including the specific nature of your skin condition and your individual circumstances. Our programmes are designed to provide the best chance of success. Through our experience, we’ve found that working with clients over a series of appointments allows for consistent guidance, tailored support, and accountability. Our framework is centred on understanding and correcting the underlying imbalances contributing to your psoriasis.
We take a functional medicine approach to psoriasis focusing on treating the individual as a whole, addressing the underlying causes rather than merely managing symptoms.
We recognise that psoriasis is often the result of complex interactions within the body, such as immune dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and lifestyle factors.
By identifying and resolving these root causes, we aim to reduce the severity and frequency of psoriasis flare-ups while improving overall health and wellbeing.
